Finchie’s

Finchie’s is a café bar run by people with learning disabilities and is open every Tuesday evening from 7.00 pm. Finchies provides a relaxed café bar environment where people can drop in for a drink and chat with friends. Finchie’s also organises monthly activities such as discos, live music nights and arts activities. Until the end of May Finchie’s will be involved in the Rising Sun’s Carnival Project and anyone coming to Finchies can make a costume and join us for carnival. Finchies particularly welcomes people with learning disabilities.

Carnival: Carnival Costume Making Workshops and Float Decoration Workshops

Want to be part of this year’s Carnival? Reading West Carnival takes place every year at the end of May and is a great community event where the people of Reading take to the streets in a day of celebration. Carnival is a festival of colour and music and the Rising Sun is there every year (We have won best float for the past 3 years). If you would like to join us we run costume and float decoration workshops from March onwards. Workshops are free. Carnival artist Philbert will help you to make your own Carnival costume on Tuesday or Thursday. You can also help to create a float with the help of artist Martin West on Wednesdays. This years theme is Tropical rainforest. All welcome. Workshops are free and start in Spring 2007. Call for more details.

Youth Arts

Are you aged 14-21? Do you want to help organise youth arts activities for yourself, your friends and other young people? We are looking for young people to get involved in programming our youth arts project, deciding on activities and helping to promote them. Be part of a team. Take control of the Arts centre and make the world a better place. Initial youth Arts activities start with acting, DJ and Carnival workshops.

Graffiti Project

We are looking for sites to place artworks by young graffiti artists. The group have already placed work in shops and art centres and can produce site specific designs and work to a brief. Portfolio of work is available. Young Graffiti Artists who would like to join the project call Larry on 0118 9866788.

Remix Reading

Will be running fortnightly open media labs. Come along and use computers loaded with lots of arty free software, from graphics manipulation to full audio mixing studios. If you get stuck just ask for help from others in the room, so don't worry if you've got no experience, it's a community learning environment. Remix Reading promotes free culture, which means sharing your work with others and encouraging remixing, rather than restricting each other with copyright. So the lab will only run free software, which you're free to share and modify. We will have copies of all of the software on CD for you to take away, and encourage people to learn more about free culture and to share the work they make on our national network web site: www.remixcommons.org
